Yam is short for William Sweezer Jankular. Oyeme or Yam-Yams are a staple crop of Africa. The ancient Ashanti ritualized oyeme during the harvest by being offering yams to Gods before being enjoyed by mortals. During the slave trade the Ashanti people learned to make pumpkin pie. Oyeme was substituted for pumpkin by the American and Caribbean Slaves,  creating a common Diaspora Soul Food known as Sweet Potato Pie or Candied Yams. Like his ancestors with the Oyeme in the Diaspora, Yam takes his individuality and culture and combines it with his Adversity to create a fusion of diverse narratives and visuals.
